Joan Mitchell
Born 1925 Chicago, USA
Died 1992 Paris, France
Joan Mitchell was an American "second generation" Abstract Expressionist painter and printmaker.
She participated in the famous "9th Street Show" in 1951, and soon established a reputation as one of the leading younger Abstract Expressionists.
Though much of her career was spent in France where she had settled permanently in 1959, she exhibited regularly in New York and maintained close friendships with many New York School artists.
Joan Mitchell is celebrated for her emotive gestural abstract canvase inspired by the natural world. Her work references flowers, trees, fields, water and sky.
She has been the subject of many important museum shows. Most recently, a comprehensive retrospective exhibition "Joan Mitchell" was held at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2021/2022), which travelled to the Baltimore Museum of Art (2022) and the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2022/2023).
